The challenge

John Chaney, IT Communications Manager for the City of Irving, was researching to find a cost-effective, updated communication solution for the Events Division in the Parks and Recreation Department. Verizon solution architects assessed customer needs and recommended utilizing the Verizon 5G Network and Push to Talk Plus services on Kyocera ruggedized smartphones to improve the City's team communication in a cost effective manner.

THE SOLUTION

After testing a number of devices, the team ultimately decided the Kyocera DuraForce Ultra 5G Push To Talk Plus (PTT+) on the Verizon Wireless 5G Network was the best option. The Total Solution was more cost-effective than the existing two-way radios being used along with the additional features of a smartphone. Because the DuraForce Ultra 5G is Military Standard 810G certified, it is protected against dust, drops, shock, vibration, and water immersion making it perfect for outdoor use with no additional casing needed. 

The Verizon 5G network ensured dependable coverage for the team to stay connected making the Push To Talk communication quicker and easier which increased field efficiency. Employees appreciated the additional functionality offered by the Kyocera DuraForce Ultra 5G and the PTT+ app. Text messaging, email and the three cameras – 24MP (main) with dual LED flash, 16MP wide-angle, and 8MP front-facing helped them document and collaborate. 

Since Kyocera DuraForce Ultra 5G took the stage, the department is enjoying better connectivity during special events and daily tasks. They also have a significant savings on their Total Solution and ongoing maintenance. In the findings, the City of Irving is looking to add accessories to the solution including Bluetooth and wired headsets, hands-free vehicle kits and multi-bay chargers from AdvanceTec.
