The Stockton Volunteer Fire Company has served Stockton, Maryland, and surrounding communities since 1924. The department responds to fire and rescue calls and provides emergency medical services. They’re equipped to offer medical assistance for BLS (Basic Life Support) and take HAZMAT dispatch calls. They are also one of the few agencies that can render aid in maritime environments – responding to calls for maritime fires, dive missions, emergency medical calls, and hazmat spills on the water.

The challenge

Fire personnel needed an intelligent rugged communication solution to help them navigate busy days on the job and at home. Stockton borders rural areas where volunteers work and live, so quick communication is essential. Because two-way radios (regulated for use during emergency fire and HAZMAT response) range from $3,000 to $10,000 each, they required a more affordable solution for non-emergency, day-to-day activities.

THE SOLUTION

After trying a popular, non-ruggedized smartphone, the Assistant Fire Chief, Tim Jerscheid, ultimately recommended the DuraForce Ultra 5G running Push to Talk Plus (PTT+) as a solution for the Company. The DuraForce Ultra 5G includes three cameras – 24MP (main) with dual LED flash, 16MP ultra wide-angle, and 8MP front-facing, allowing the Company to capture the action from every angle – even underwater or in low light conditions. Chief Jerscheid knew the built-in memory for storage and fast processing speed for uploading would be essential for taking and sharing photos and videos in the line of duty. He also utilizes a holster and Hands-Free Car Kit that charges the DuraForce Ultra 5G in his vehicle.
