SUMTER COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
SUMTER COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SELECTS ULTRA-RUGGED KYOCERA DURAFORCE PRO 3 SMARTPHONES
In Southern Georgia, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) serves the public with 44 sworn officers and 20 border patrol. Its mission is to protect and serve its citizens while ensuring the safety and well-being of its law enforcement officers. To ensure critical incidents are well-documented and responded to appropriately, body-worn cameras (BWCs) became a proven solution. However, after transitioning from a well-known BWC brand to Kyocera DuraForce PRO 3 on Verizon’s nationwide 5G network, with Visual Labs software by Versaterm,
Sumter County Sheriff’s Office gained an advanced, reliable, easy-to-use, body-worn camera solution they can rely on, with numerous safety and convenience improvements, all while lowering costs.
Sumter County Sheriff’s Office understood the value of body-worn camera solutions, utilizing over 20 BWCs from a leading brand – however, those devices and associated software proved unsatisfactory for many reasons. While body-worn cameras serve an important purpose, not all BWCs are created equal.
First, traditional BWCs are limited in their connectivity capabilities, as many cannot connect to the internet without being physically docked. In addition to lengthy video transfer times, lack of wireless connectivity means critical video footage can’t be uploaded automatically for instant remote viewing at the police station.
Further limiting their body-worn cameras’ usefulness, lack of GPS tracking meant SCSO could not be sure of the location of their officers and their vehicles at any given moment, elevating safety concerns.
In addition, the lifespan of conventional BWCs may be short-lived as many aren’t durable enough to withstand daily use in the field, increasing device downtime and lowering productivity – nor do most have removable battery capabilities, raising apprehension about future battery replacement service costs.
In the face of those limitations, plus already expensive hardware and increasingly costly cloud storage, SCSO became determined to find a more valuable yet cost-effective body-worn camera solution.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Office discovered Versaterm Visual Labs advanced body-worn camera software and Kyocera’s ultra-rugged devices through Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources, which saw success in utilizing this total solution.
Versaterm recommended DuraForce PRO 3, featuring fast 5G upload and live streaming speeds¹, ultra-rugged durability, loud audio, and three programmable buttons for quick activation of video and audio recording in high-stress situations – making it the clear hardware choice for Sumter County.
SCSO worked with its Verizon Account Representative to procure several DuraForce PRO 3 devices for its police force – and with Kyocera + Versaterm’s cost-effective solution, SCSO was able to equip more officers with BWCs at a lower cost than its previous provider.
Kyocera DuraForce PRO 3 is Android Enterprise Recommended for data security, offers quick-access body-worn camera functionality via any of its three programmable buttons, plus GPS tracking, video and audio capture, and wireless data capabilities, so critical footage can be quickly and automatically uploaded to secure cloud storage over Verizon’s ultra-fast 5G network¹.
With integrated redaction capabilities, image capture during video recording, and so much more,
Versaterm Visual Labs software combined with DuraForce PRO 3, offers a powerful, user-friendly,
CJIS/TAA-compliant solution with mobile application and web services to review and download footage remotely, saving time and increasing efficiency. Plus, with GPS, officer and cruiser locations can be monitored and geofenced at no additional cost – allowing quick dispatch response for increased officer safety.
After just four months, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office reported²:
SCSO will continue using DuraForce PRO 3 + Versaterm Visual Labs as their preferred BWC solution. Moving forward, SCSO hopes to procure remote speaker microphones (RSMs) to further augment device communication abilities.
The strategic decision to select DuraForce PRO 3 plus Versaterm Visual Labs underscores Sumter County Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to accountability and safety.
